81st Academy Awards Nominations

academy-awards-2
How much do I care about Academy Awards? Not since a long time ago, but even so, once in a year I would yeah, ogling about it for a mere amusement of seeing what are those in the AMPAS thought as the year’s stand-outs. So…. in a spirit of that mere amusement, I took a small-notice on the exclusion of “The Dark Knight” and let it slide. With or without a golden statue, “The Dark Knight” remains my personal top-1 film of the year 2008.

Best Motion Picture of the Year
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Frost/Nixon
Milk
The Reader
Slumdog Millionaire
Personally, I’ve seen only three of the noms, but I figured that “The Reader” isn’t really deserving to be in the top 5 (60% Rottentomatoes rating?) and “Milk” well, I never really fancy with Sean Penn anyways.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role
Richard Jenkins for The Visitor
Frank Langella for Frost/Nixon
Sean Penn for Milk
Brad Pitt for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Mickey Rourke for The Wrestler
Academy would be so wrong not to give Rourke the golden statue

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role
Anne Hathaway for Rachel Getting Married
Angelina Jolie for Changeling
Melissa Leo for Frozen River
Meryl Streep for Doubt
Kate Winslet for The Reader
Haven’t seen anything from this category

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role
Josh Brolin for Milk
Robert Downey Jr. for Tropic Thunder
Philip Seymour Hoffman for Doubt
Heath Ledger for The Dark Knight
Michael Shannon for Revolutionary Road
Again, if the Academy doesn’t give Heath Ledger the golden statue, prepare to be swathed with avalanche of rages and curses from the fans. I wouldn’t think that the Academy would risk to lose more from its already thinned out credibility by going against the publicly accepted truth. Besides, let’s say Heath Ledger doesn’t win, I would very curios to know the acceptance speech from the winner

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role
Amy Adams for Doubt
Penélope Cruz for Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Viola Davis for Doubt
Taraji P. Henson for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Marisa Tomei for The Wrestler
I’ve loved Amy Adams since Junebug in 2004, and never falter from her since. I don’t have any reasons not to rooted for her in this category>

Best Achievement in Directing
Danny Boyle for Slumdog Millionaire
Stephen Daldry for The Reader
David Fincher for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Ron Howard for Frost/Nixon
Gus Van Sant for Milk
Personally rooting for Fincher

  • American Idol 8, Episode 1 and 2 I’m a sucker for reality shows in a way that I don’t mind wasting precious hours ogling any half-decent reality shows. American Idol was no exception. The show kicked off its eight season last week with auditions from Phoenix and Kansas City. As usual, with any given reality shows, the odds are some of the [...] »

  • Saw V (2008) I’ve never really considered myself as a fan of Saw series or the subgenre it hauled, “torture porn” Contradictorily, I’ve always managed to saw all of its unrated version of the franchise. Given that the mood is right, though. Now, it is a fairly fair predicament that whenever a movie-goer went to a film called [...] »
